Who was Nakamura Tempu?
Nakamura Tempu Sensei (1876-1968) taught Shin-shin-toitsu-do (“The Way of Mind and Body Unification”) for more than 50 years and authored bestselling books. He trained over 100,000 people, including members of the Japanese Imperial Family, government officials, business leaders, top athletes, celebrated actors, martial arts experts, and notable novelists.
In Nakamura Sensei’s early years he contracted tuberculosis, and he was told he didn't have long to live. In response, he launched a global quest to cure his tuberculosis or at least find peace of mind in the face of death. This search took him to the USA, where he studied medicine at Columbia University. Next, he traveled to Europe, where he lived with actress Sarah Bernhardt and researched psychology. In Egypt he encountered Kaliappa, an Indian mystic and yoga master, who brought him to India for a final attempt to save his life. After austere meditation in the Himalayas, Nakamura Tempu attained enlightenment, shook off the bonds of illness, and returned to Japan a changed man. In 1919, he founded Shin-shin-toitsu-do, his groundbreaking system of Japanese yoga and meditation. Since then over one million people have had their lives transformed by his extraordinary teachings, but until recently it's been difficult to learn his original and authentic Shin-shin-toitsu-do outside of Japan.
